他不属于他所在的时代他所在的世界，他好像去错了时空的流亡贵族，自得其乐，但离群索居。
他很浪漫，在他用以摧毁国会大楼的炸药中，甚至混合得有大量烟火。该时刻，倾城惊动，众人仰面观望，这阴霾世界有一场火树银花。他把复仇变成节日。他带来光。

没有理由地，V总是叫我想起伦敦老城区爬满常春藤的灰墙，落雨的泰晤士河，浓雾中维多利亚式样的街灯，一切旧的，美丽的，而又昏暗的事物。

故事的时间应该是二零四零年前后，地点，伦敦。
那是最坏的时代，整个英国都处于严酷的强权控制之下，好像乔治•奥威尔的《1984》，在传感器和监视系统的包围里，人们沉默而顺从。
V是二十年前政府的病毒性生物武器研制中，所用的活体试验品里，唯一的生还者。
而他复仇的对象则是一个时代——有序的灰暗的死气沉沉的时代，在其中，同性恋、异教徒、政治激进分子都将被逮捕被处决，他们莫名消失，好像没有存在过。
这个剔除了全部异质元素的世界，表面上纯粹，平静，没有锋芒，呵，美丽新世界。
但大众的怨怼愤怒却转而向内，汹汹暗涌，这虚幻的乌托邦。

阴差阳错地，伊芙（娜塔丽•波曼饰）被卷入V的复仇行动，并被带回他位于地底的家中。
次日，她醒来，懵懂中听见荡来一支老歌，《泪流成河》。又见幽暗走廊遍布书籍、雕塑和油画——来自政府仓库的违禁品。
伊芙有些恍惚，是否走错了时光来错了年代，她不知今夕何夕。
娜塔丽•波曼，呵，我实在忍不住想要说一说她，这个十二岁已经颠倒众生的女孩。成年的她，面貌趋于中正，邪气收敛起来，但依然美艳。而且，这一回，她又遇上孤独的杀手，又与他相爱。

爱得又隐忍又寂寞。
电影中，她跟V少有恋人间的身体接触，从始到终，他们不过共舞一曲，还有一个吻，隔着面具。
甚至，她都不晓得他长什么样子。
伊芙对V说
——我不明白，为什么我对你一无所知，而你却成为我生命中最重要的事。
呵，大概是因为，这世上有太多人没有面具，但却以其他方式掩饰着自己，而惟独这个男子，戴着面具，却敞开了他的灵魂。他美丽昏暗的老灵魂。

电影中有一封藏在牢房老鼠洞里的信，非常动人。
“给我不认识的你”，它来自一个因同性恋而被捕并且在狱中死去的女子，瓦拉瑞。
在信里，她说，我们的尊严是那么的小，但那是我们的仅有，那是我们最后一寸领地，但在这一寸里，我们是自由的。
读过这封信的人——V、伊芙，都被它深深打动过，乃至死亡当前仍不肯退却。
是这封信唤醒了他们体内沉睡的力量，使他们可以与死、与恐惧对垒。他们自由了。

故事的结尾，V死去。他躺在装满炸药的列车里，国会大厦是这辆车的终站。
他的身边簇拥着他种的红玫瑰，已经绝迹的斯嘉丽•卡森。
至死他也戴着面具，永恒微笑，笑容诡谲轻蔑。

他独自行过死荫的幽谷，去赴一年前订下的，那一回菊花约。
他将二十年的寂寞谋划，换一场漫天烟花众人来看，来惊动，来歌哭，来欢喜。
东方曙色初动，他带来光。
