V是二十年前政府的病毒性生物武器研制中,所用的活体试验品里,唯一的生还者。
而他复仇的对象则是一个时代——有序的灰暗的死气沉沉的时代,在其中,同性恋、异教徒、政治激进分子都将被逮捕被处决,他们莫名消失,好像没有存在过。
这个剔除了全部异质元素的世界,表面上纯粹,平静,没有锋芒,呵,美丽新世界。
但大众的怨怼愤怒却转而向内,汹汹暗涌,这虚幻的乌托邦。
阴差阳错地,伊芙(娜塔丽•波曼饰)被卷入V的复仇行动,并被带回他位于地底的家中。
次日,她醒来,懵懂中听见荡来一支老歌,《泪流成河》。又见幽暗走廊遍布书籍、雕塑和油画——来自政府仓库的违禁品。
伊芙有些恍惚,是否走错了时光来错了年代,她不知今夕何夕。
娜塔丽•波曼,呵,我实在忍不住想要说一说她,这个十二岁已经颠倒众生的女孩。成年的她,面貌趋于中正,邪气收敛起来,但依然美艳。而且,这一回,她又遇上孤独的杀手,又与他相爱。

呵,大概是因为,这世上有太多人没有面具,但却以其他方式掩饰着自己,而惟独这个男子,戴着面具,却敞开了他的灵魂。他美丽昏暗的老灵魂。
电影中有一封藏在牢房老鼠洞里的信,非常动人。
“给我不认识的你”,它来自一个因同性恋而被捕并且在狱中死去的女子,瓦拉瑞。
在信里,她说,我们的尊严是那么的小,但那是我们的仅有,那是我们最后一寸领地,但在这一寸里,我们是自由的。
读过这封信的人——V、伊芙,都被它深深打动过,乃至死亡当前仍不肯退却。
是这封信唤醒了他们体内沉睡的力量,使他们可以与死、与恐惧对垒。他们自由了。
故事的结尾,V死去。他躺在装满炸药的列车里,国会大厦是这辆车的终站。
他的身边簇拥着他种的红玫瑰,已经绝迹的斯嘉丽•卡森。
至死他也戴着面具,永恒微笑,笑容诡谲轻蔑。
他独自行过死荫的幽谷,去赴一年前订下的,那一回菊花约。
他将二十年的寂寞谋划,换一场漫天烟花众人来看,来惊动,来歌哭,来欢喜。
