故意损坏文物 vandalism

The parents of a teen vandal from Jiangsu province have apologized to the public for the graffiti their son scratched on a stone sculpture in an ancient temple in Egypt, which triggered an online uproar as Internet users dubbed it a "loss of face" for all Chinese people.

江苏一名少年在埃及古神庙浮雕上刻字破坏文物的行为在网络上引发热议，不少网友都称其行为丢了全体中国人的脸。目前，该少年的父母已就此事向公众道歉。

上文中的vandal指someone who willfully destroys or defaces property（故意损毁财产或公物的人），teen vandal就是指“损毁文物的少年”。“故意损毁公物的行为”就是vandalism，

例如：It is high time to call halt to cultural vandalism.（摧残文化的行为实在应该予以制止了。）如果要表达“损毁（文化艺术品）”这个动作则可用vandalize，如vandalize cultural relics（破坏文物）。

近几年，有关中国游客低素质行为（bad manners）的报道常见报端，包括在国外景点乱扔垃圾（littering）、随地吐痰（spitting）、大声喧哗（making loud noises）以及此次涉及的破坏文物（vandalizing cultural relics）等。

“蓖麻毒素”为何物？

美国司法部表示，因涉嫌与美国总统奥巴马及另外两名官员收到的蓖麻毒素信件有关，联邦调查局已于当地时间周三逮捕了一名密西西比男子。蓖麻毒素是一种致命毒素。

蓖麻毒素（ricin）是从蓖麻籽（castor beans）中提炼出来的，其形态可以是粉末状（powder）、雾状（mist）或颗粒状（pellet），且很难追踪。

蓖麻毒素中毒症状（symptoms of ricin poisoning）大概会在接触毒素十个小时内开始出现，接触毒素方式不同，中毒症状也有所不同。

毒素被吸入（inhaled）时表现出的症状为，呼吸困难（difficulty in breathing）、发热（fever）、咳嗽（cough）、恶心（nausea）、出汗（sweating），以及胸闷（tightness in the chest）。最后导致血压急速下降（blood pressure plummets），呼吸停止。

毒素被吞食时（swallowed）的症状为，呕吐（vomiting）、腹泻（diarrhea）、脱水（dehydration）、低血压（low blood pressure）、痉挛（seizures）以及尿血（blood in the urine）。几日之内，肝（liver）、脾（spleen）、肾（kidney）等器官均会表现衰竭，最终导致中毒者死亡。

蓖麻毒素会阻止身体细胞产生所需的蛋白质（protein）。接触毒素后36到72小时内就可能导致死亡。

目前没有已知的解毒剂（antidote）。中毒后的处理方式包括，使用人工呼吸机（respirator）、输液、洗胃（flushing the stomach），以及对低血压采取治疗措施。
