40金收官！中美持平，美媒全程紧盯“金牌榜”

随着中国选手李雯雯11日在女子举重81公斤以上级比赛中实现卫冕，中国体育代表团在巴黎奥运会创造了境外奥运会参赛最好成绩——40枚金牌、27枚银牌、24枚铜牌。

As the Olympic flame went out after an extraordinary show of human strength and endurance for two weeks, Team China's outstanding performance, highlighted by a record haul of 40 gold medals, the adorable nature of young athletes and their friendly exchanges with their foreign peers, was enshrined in the history of the Games in the French capital.

中国国家体育总局副局长、巴黎奥运会中国体育代表团副团长周进强在11日的记者会上表示，本届奥运会上，中国体育代表团参赛运动员404人，共参加了30个大项42个分项232个小项的比赛，在11个大项14个分项上获得共91枚奖牌。如果用一个词来概括本届奥运会中国体育代表团参赛成绩的特点，那就是“突破”。

Zhou Jinqiang, vice-president of the Chinese delegation, said on Sunday at a news conference in Paris that the overall performance at the Games could be summed up with one word — "breakthrough".

"We reached new heights in terms of the total number of gold medals won (at an overseas edition) and the number of events that we first won medals in. We also proved that our athletic strength has been significantly expanded to more sports," said Zhou. Zhou added that the Chinese delegation has successfully completed its mission and realized its goals.     

The day we never hoped would come is here. The apocalypse is upon us. OK, overly dramatic. And not very surprising. China is tied with the United States in gold medals, 33-33, with two days to go. Remember that’s the standard of success in most of the world, except the US, which looks at total medals.

无独有偶，NBC于11日报道称“在一个关键指标上，美国并没有彻底击败对手，那就是金牌。随着所有项目的结束，中国在奖牌榜上与美国队并列，共获得40枚金牌。”美国有线电视新闻网（CNN）11日也说，最后一个比赛日以中国39枚金牌、美国38枚金牌开始。在东京奥运会上，美国最终领先中国一枚金牌，若想重现这一佳绩，美国运动员需要在周日“表现强劲”。

There is one crucial metric in which the US did not smash the competition, however: gold medals. With all the events completed, China tied Team USA in the medal table, with 40 golds.

此前，在男子跳高决赛中，新西兰选手哈米什·科尔与美国选手谢尔比·麦克尤恩的成绩相同。当被裁判问及是否愿意分享金牌时，两人选择进行加赛，最终新西兰选手科尔夺得了金牌。

而因为这枚金牌的丢失，美国队截止到奥运第15日，金牌数为38枚，被39枚金牌的中国代表团再次反超，暂时离开了奖牌榜榜首的宝座。麦克尤恩成为了社交媒体的“红人”，很多美国网友将矛头指向了他。

We concluded that the Office of National Intelligence’s persistence in grudgingly naming China just an “increasingly near-peer competitor” is a nostalgic mistake. Ask the athletes competing in the Olympics. China must be recognized as a full-spectrum peer competitor.
