十年风雨路 感谢有你陪伴—记平和英语村十四周年庆

提起印度，你眼前会浮现出怎样一幅画面？魅惑十足的民族舞蹈，美味劲辣的咖喱，还是色彩艳丽的纱丽？印度是四大文明古国之一，其丰富的传统文化浸染着每一个当地人。Juliet Victor出生于印度南部，在她获得自然科学学士学位和饮食技能证书后，以教师的身份来到了另一文明古国——中国，2002年在珠海市平和英语村执教，成为众多外籍教师中的一员。她兴趣爱好广泛，极为热爱烹饪，用美食结交各国朋友。时光飞逝，在不知不觉间，Juliet在珠海平和英语村呆了十年，十年的任教生涯有欢乐有悲伤，同时都伴随着思念。2012年11月6日，在这个秋高气爽的时节，我们很高兴邀请到Juliet接受采访，来与广大的英语学习爱好者分享高效学习英语的秘诀。

L: GLV’s 14^th birthday is coming soon. Since you have been teaching English in GLV for ten years. Can you say something about the development and difference of GLV during the 10 years?

(平和英语村的十四周年庆即将到来，鉴于您在此任教十年，能简单说说其变化吗？)

J: Yes, I am glad that GLV’s B-Day is coming. Speaking of the changes, the biggest development here I think is the Evening Program. When I first came here, the teachers would not have the attendant sheet. The students stepped in your class by random. That means the teachers didn’t know how many students will attend their class, which caused a big trouble to teachers, because they need to do the lesson plan and need to know how many students should be involve in his/her lecture before each class.

（我非常高兴平和英语村的十四岁生日快到了。说到变化嘛，我认为是其晚间课程，我最初来到平和时，晚间课程还没有形成体系，学生根据对老师的了解自由地进出课室，这给老师备课造成很大的困难，因为备课时需要确定学生人数。）

L: You are one of the respectable teachers with 10 years teaching English experience in GLV. So can you share some tricks to let your students handle English well in a short time? Which part do you concentrate most, listening, speaking, reading or writing?

（在平和作为一位受人敬仰的拥有丰富教学经验的教师，您可以分享一下让您学生在短时间内掌握英语的方法呢？听、说、读、写哪方面让您备受关注？）

J: First of all, thank you for saying so. In my opinion, every teacher in GLV is doing his/her job well. They are respected by students, too. As for the tricks, sometimes I will guide the beginners to recite the approachable words first, which are easy for them to keep them in mind and they can learn more new words. For example, the students can remember five simple words in each class and the new words can last for a long time, which is better than that you ask them to recite the challenging words, they might probably forget most of them the other day! And besides that, keeping concentration on one book only is very important for them. Some of the students may ask me what kind of book is good for them to study. I would always give them the same answer, please focus on your own book that we have in class. Because the teachers have been using the series of books for more than 3 years and they use these books to prepare their class. Once the students get to know the books perfectly, then it will be more helpful for him/her to catch what the teachers say and to understand the class easier. Otherwise they might be distracted by different kinds of materials. And sometimes the teachers have no ideas about these books and can’t offer help ASAP. In the meantime, I pay more attention on listening and speaking.

（首先谢谢你的赞美，在我看来，平和英语村中的每个老师都非常出色，同时备受学生们的尊敬。至于学好英语的技巧，我会让学生牢记一些实用性的英语词汇，而不是那些生僻的就连西方人士也不太理解的词汇，这对他们来说比较轻松，不会造成压力。打个比方来说，学生在这节课上能记住5个简单易懂的单词，到了明天还能记住，如果是死记硬背难懂的词汇，他们可能隔天全部忘记。除此之外，专注于教材也非常重要，教师三年来一直用这一套教材备课，如果学生能够多花时间在上面，熟悉课本，那么它们上课时就会更全面理解老师所讲的内容。否则，学生会被众多不同的书本弄的晕头转向，发现很多问题，及时问老师，因为老师对课本不熟悉的关系，也不能及时作答。与此同时，我最关注的是听力和口语。）

L: As we all know, you come from a beautiful country with a long history, India. There are thousands of local dialects in your country. Is it English your first language, or Hindi? What make you have the pure accent not like the rest of the Indian?

（您来自古老美丽的印度。那儿有成千上万种方言。请问英语是您的第一语言吗，还是说印度语？还有就是您是如何拥有纯正的口音的，据我所知，很多印度人有浓重的口音？）

J: English is our official language and we have different dialects in different areas. I come from the southern part of India, where Hindi is banned by the municipal government, so I can’t speak Hindi well. When I started school, our teachers had their classes in English only and that is the reason I don’t have the strong accent like the rest of the others. But people in India are good at English writing even though they can’t speak it well.

（英语是我们国家的官方语言，同时我们的确存在着多种方言。我来自印度南部，当地政府禁止我们学习印度语，所以我上的学校都是英语教学，也正是如此，我没有那浓重的口音。但印度人在英语写作方面很纯正，不像他们的口音那样糟糕。）

L: you have a bachelor degree in natural science. And you love cooking so much that you also pass the text about cooking skills and gained a certificate finally. You really love the nature and delicious food. So would you mind to tell people your favorite food?

（您拥有自然科学学士学位和烹饪证书，由此而知，您一定热爱世界和美食。能透露一下您喜爱的食物吗？）

J: Yes, I do love cooking. Our families seldom dine out, because cooking is one of the best thing for me to do. I love curry especially. But we can’t get the authentic curry nearby, so I have to go to ShenZhen, Macao, Hongkong to buy the real one. I can also have them sent by my relatives who live in India. I know there are all kinds of curries in the supermarket, but they have impurity substance, which taste so differently. Once I touch it, I know it is not the curry I want. And it is very easy for people to have home-make one. The ingredients are onions, tomatoes, gingers and garlic, which are basic material you would need.

（我的确热爱烹饪。这也是我们一家人很少出外吃饭的原因之一。我尤其喜欢印度的传统咖喱食物，遗憾的是，我们在周围附近买不到正宗的咖喱，所以我有空时会去深圳、澳门或香港采购，甚至让我在印度的亲戚朋友寄送过来。我知道在超市能购买到咖喱，可是都是假的，因为它们偿起来有天壤之别。只要我用手摸一下，就知道真伪。制作咖喱也十分简单，你需要的基础食材是洋葱、马铃薯、姜和蒜。）

L: At the end of this chat, can you recommend some useful ways to study English for the beginners, such as websites and books?

（在谈话的最后，您能够推荐给初学者一些有效的方法学好英语吗？例如一些网站和读物。）

J: personally, I seldom go through the websites, but I am sure there are tons of English webs on the internet which are easy for all of us to connect to the outside word. About the books, like I said before, you can always go for your textbooks or class materials. If you want some short and interesting story books, you can go to the students’ library to borrow one or two. I am sure you can have benefit from reading them. As a teacher here, I would be glad to postpone the class a little bit longer, I don’t say one hour, only 15 to 20 minutes for the students who really want to study English well. During the time, we can chat. If someone has a question, I am willing to help him/her to solve it. But self-resolution is the main element to tip the balance of studying English well.

 I strongly recommend the students to have a dictionary made by their own. When they confront some new words, they write them down on a little notes book arranged in alphabet order so that they can always review them when they have little memory about the words. Also they can easily bring the portable dictionary anywhere as they want. But sorting the new words out take times, you should persist to it.

（个人而言，我很少上网，但肯定的是，网络资源丰富而且易于获取。至于书籍，就如我之前所说的课堂教材。如果你还希望阅读一些短小有趣的故事，你可以到平和的学生图书馆借阅，你从中会获得益处的。作为老师，每节课我都会尽量延迟离开教室，利用15到20分钟的时间辅导那些一心想把英语学好的学生，我们也可以聊天，如果学生有疑问，我可以马上帮其解决，但要学好英语自我决心是必不可少的因素。我强烈建议学生制作个人的英语字典，当他们遇到不理解的单词，用本子按字母排序记下来，待忘记时，随手可掏出来看。但整理需要时间，重在坚持。）

      采访结束后，我询问Juliet的意见，问她是否介意将采访录上传网络，她大方的表示同意并强烈建议说一定要让更多的学生和英语学习爱好者知道她推荐的“小词典DIY”记词法，她兢兢业业地教学态度着实让我感动不已，也正因为老师们执教的专业精神，平和英语村才能够茁壮成长，迎来辉煌灿烂的十四周岁生日！
