    There are many reasons why Chinese students are scared of participating in class discussion in English. However, in my opinion, there are two main points that lead to students not joining in with class discussion in English.

 

First and for most, Chinese students may think they are weak in English and that cannot express themselves clearly. Thus, they feel stressed and they do not have enough courage to take part in discussion. For example, if people are weak in oral English, they do not have enough encourage going to discussion classes in English. They are afraid of making mistakes.

    Therefore, they do not want to take that program. In addition, students do not have creative thinking and brain-storming skills; they cannot have any ideas even in Chinese. If the teacher, for instance, gives students a topic to illustrate his/her opinions, but the students do not have any opinion on the topic even if in Chinese, then they will not choose the class discussion in English. As a result, because of lacking creative thinking and brainstorming skills, they wouldn’t like to choose discussion club in English.

 

Simply put, as far as I am concerned, students’ English skills and their creative thinks skills lead students not taking part in discussion classes in English.
